Tim Bran has had a remarkable few years, developing international recognition as a producer and mixer. Foremost of these achievements has been as one half of the production duo MyRiot, who alongside fellow Big Lifer Roy Kerr, produced the debut album for London Grammar “If You Wait” which was one of the most successful debut albums of 2013. Tim’s recognition as a mix engineer has also grown on the back of his huge radio mixes for La Roux “In For The Kill” and “Bulletproof” a few years ago.
Buoyed by the success of London Grammar, Tim and Roy have been in high demand over the last 18 months. Much of the latter half of 2014 was involved in producing the debut album for Virgin’s Walking On Cars, the most exciting and hotly tipped act to come out of Ireland this year. Having already had support slots with The Script, James Bay and The Kooks under their belts and playing sold out shows to their adoring home crowd; everything is shaping up nicely for their highly anticipated debut album release later this year.
Also in 2014 MyRiot were asked to write and produce tracks for the Brit Award winning, 5x platinum selling James Morrison. They are currently five tracks into the long awaited fourth studio album and follow up to the platinum selling last album, The Awakening, which saw James continue his reign as one of the UK’s leading artists.
Additionally in 2014, Tim and Roy produced tracks for breakthrough artist Rhodes. Their production can be heard on both early EPs “Home” and “Morning”, the latter prompting big reviews with the Guardian saying ‘Bran/Kerr have turned up the dials on Morning, taking Rhodes - who you may have seen supporting Laura Marling, Nick Mulvey, London Grammar or Rufus Wainwright - away from the realms of the lonesome troubadour to the point where he sounds like a one-man Coldplay.’ After being tipped as the next hype from Zane Lowe and supporting Sam Smith on tour as well as prestigious festival slots at Radio 1’s Big Weekend and Glastonbury, Rhodes is set to take this year by storm.
MyRiot also co-produced and mixed tracks for Seafret on both the “Give Me Something” and Oceans’ EPs. This winsome duo have already played the Sundown Festival and supported Hozier, and both lead tracks from each EP been supported on evening shows on Radio 1.
In 2013 Tim and Roy finished producing the debut LP ‘If You wait’ by the brilliant London Grammar. Since the album was released in November 2013 it has gone on to sell platinum in the UK, Australia, Belgium and France, was nominated for a Brit Award and won an Ivor Novello award for the track “Strong”. The quick rise in success for London Grammar was accredited to a few things including Hannah Reid the lead vocalist, praising Roy and Tim’s work on the album. “Tim is amazing at recording, of finding the best way of recording a guitar or my vocal. Roy had the strongest relationship with Dot and they worked on production together”.
Tim and Roy are also gaining recognition for their writing prowess and in between studio sessions they are focussing on this. Recent co-writing sessions include such luminaries as James Morrison, Becky Hill, Mononoke and Marlon Roudette but they are equally as happy writing with emerging talent and have had really productive sessions recently with Aquillo, Cosima, Lulu James and James Fox.
Tim has also played a valuable part of Youth’s production team over the years and in 2013 he co-produced and mixed “Chants” (with Youth) for the Gyoto Monks of Tibet. The album marks a hundred years of the Tibetan struggle for independence from China. Featuring chanting monks from the Forbidden Temple, the album is a rich amalgam of Buddha bar style beats and stunning Tibetan folk instrumentation, alongside soaring strings. A very special and rewarding project to be involved with.
In 2012 Tim produced and mixed the new Lucinda Belle record shortly to be released on Decca. Lucinda rose to success with her eclectic style bringing together the harp and her unique voice with Electric live performances. Also this year he and produced and mixed ex Ou Est La Swimming Pool front man’s new project – Ghost.
Tim has had a long, varied and successful career in the music business. It all began humbly enough in Guernsey, where aged 17, he converted an old German communications bunker into his own music studio. Here he honed his keyboard and guitar skills, as well as engineering skills, before being called upon by Island Records to become their in-house producer at the legendary 'Bunker Studios' in London. Here Tim worked with some of the most intriguing alternative musicians of the day, including the eccentric genius Julian Cope. Tim left the Bunker to play bass and keyboards with Julian full time and it was during this phase Tim hooked up with Greg Roberts and the pair became Dreadzone.
Dreadzone quickly built up worldwide acclaim as pioneers of a fusion of dub/reggae with the new sounds of techno that fired the dance generation of the early 90s. Signed initially to Creation Records and the later on Virgin Records, the band had several successful albums including ‘360 Degrees’ and 'Second Light' which spawned the hit single 'Little Britain'.
In the mid-90's, Tim co-founded a music technology company called Rocket Network. It enabled real time musical collaboration over the internet and was pioneering in its day. This kept him busy until the end of 2002, when the company was sold to Digidesign, creators of ProTools.
Tim was now free to return to his real passion of music. He quickly returned to the studio and began releasing material under the moniker of Subsonar, further musical explorations in the field of dub and electronica. Freshly signed to Youth's label Liquid Sound, it wasn't long before Youth called on Tim's extensive programming and musical skills and he quickly became a fully signed up member of the team. Tim has since worked on many of Youth's productions, programming for the likes of Paul McCartney, The Delays, Embrace, Primal Scream, The Charlatans, The Infadels and Mumm-ra amongst others. This pairing is still going strong today.
Tim Bran has an ongoing working relationship with Richard Ashcroft. Over the summer of 2011, he and Richard have been hard at work at Richard’s home studio , crafting early recordings of what is sure to be his next studio release. Tim entered the production premier league by co-producing and mixing the recent Verve album 'Forth'. Tim's role in making the record relied hugely on his skills as arranger and editor, helping craft the prodigious output of the band into the resulting track listing. Described as a stunning return to form, the band's first studio recordings in over ten years, features the stunning singles 'Love Is Noise' and 'Rather Be'.
A large part of 2011 has been devoted to working with Pulse on the “Studio In Session” sessions, soon to be televised on MTV and beyond. Tim (and fellow Big Life client Clive Goddard) were tasked to record and mix three bands, performing three tracks over the course of one day, working alongside such production luminaries such as Tony Visconte, Andy Gill, Youth and Jamie Hince. The pace was frantic and the results electric! Featured artists include Razorlight, Foster The People, Ellie Goulding, Morrissey, Hard Fi and The Kills.
Over the last few years Tim has found time to mix singles for many different artists. Some of the high lights include hipster new comers Neon Indian, The Drums, Scissor Sisters, Erratic Man, singles for Thomas Dybdahl, KT Tunstall, the Erland And The Carnival LP, Toploader, Young Kato and a series of live tracks for Rebecca Ferguson.
As mentioned above, Tim is an integral part of Youth’s team and over the past five years, they have made many records together. A recent highlight has been Tim’s work with Youth on The View’s last critically acclaimed album “Bread And Circuses”. Recorded in London’s classic Brit Row studios, it features the majestic single “Grace”. The band have been touring constantly over the summer to support it’s release. Tim mixed the album with Clive Goddard.
In 2009 and Tim worked on a huge variety of artists (alongside Youth) as his programmer, keyboard player and vocal producer. From Kirsty Almeida’s jazz infused tunes on her Decca debut “Pure Blue Green” to the Charlatans last offering “Who We Touch”, Tim adds so much value with his programming ideas and keyboard skills. Also in 2009 Tim played an intergral role on the beautiful new album from one of Belgium’s most respected artists – Ozark Henry. Entitled “Hvelreki”, it was a huge success in his native Belgium on release and garnered much acclaim on its roll out across Europe. Tim mixed the album. So successful was this partnership that Ozark called Tim back again at the end of 2012 to additionally produce and mix his next LP “Gold”.
