There are very few producers who can literally be called pioneers, but Roy Kerr AKA The Freelance Hellraiser is one of them. It all started with a little bootleg, cooked up in his bedroom, called ‘Stroke of Genius’, that wickedly sampled The Strokes and Christine Aguilera. It became a dance floor anthem in indie clubs the world over and set the stage for the bootleg/ mash up scene that exploded that year and still has a rightful place in club land today.
But Roy is so much more than the mash-up king. In 2008, he has consolidated his reputation as one of the most talented writer producers in the electronic/ pop arena. Teamed up with fellow producer and musician Anu Pillai AKA Freeform 5, the pair have been working with some of the most hotly tipped electro-pop artists to emerge in recent years. Under the moniker of Kid Gloves Roy and Anu had their first hit for Universal's Ladyhawke with the disco-thumping ‘Paris Is Burning’, a Radio 1 favourite. They have also written and produced further tracks for her debut album for Modular. The pair spent a large part of the beginning of 2009 writing and recording for Little Boots. You can hear their production skills on her stunning debut album “Hands”, on the tracks “Symmetry” and “Not Now”.
Also in 2009, they hooked up with VV Brown and wrote and produced her forthcoming single for Island “Game Over” and have also just completed a session with Atlantic signing Primary 1 and have production credits on three tracks on his debut album.
In addition to this, the pair concentrated on writing and producing more ‘club’ orientated material, culminating on their first release on Fools Gold “Brand New Dance” and some barnstorming DJ sets at that year’s WMC in Miami. The remixes the pair have done over the past few years for Santigold, Roisin Murphy, Black Kids amongst others, have had dancefloors shaking!
2010 was another highly creative year for Kid Gloves. They were in big demand as quirky pop producers and wrote and produced tracks for a host of emerging US and UK talent including Tawiah, The Duchess, Hero, Lana Del Ray, Loick and Flo.
Over the summer of that year they took time out writing for other to concentrate on writing material for the debut Kid Glove album. Signed to Fools Gold, their first release “Bare Knuckle Ride” went straight into top ten on Beatport and has been spun by Annie Mac on Radio 1.
Roy hasn't abandoned his work under his Freelance moniker and his recent remix of The Verve's hit single ‘Love Is Noise’ is a totally brilliant electro workout. He has also recently remixed tracks for Imelda May, Hard Fi and The Sound Of Arrows
In 2011, Roy and Anu continued to focus on writing and releasing material through Fools Gold, releasing a follow up single in the summer and an album to follow later in the year. They have also been writing with William Orbit, produced a track for new York hipsters The Knock, produced a fantastic underground record for the Scissor Sisters, and found European success by producing and mixing tracks on “Lokemo” by Belgium act Arsenal. The album has now gone gold in Belgium.
Over the last few years Roy has made a name for himself with some high profile and lucrative synchronisations, writing and producing material for worldwide campaigns for both Bacardi and Nokia. He continues to work actively in this arena, having just completed producing music for the current William Hill campaign.
Roy is also hotly in demand as a programmer. In January 2007 he completed a very creative session for Jacknife Lee, programming for The Hives, adding his own unique twist to their garage sound. He is also an ongoing collaborator with Youth and has worked alongside him for artists such as Bond and Youth's own Vertical Smile project.
Roy also has a long-standing relationship with Jacknife Lee and has programmed for him on numerous projects over the last few years. In 2009 he spent a highly creative time with JKL down in his Kentish studio where they were busy creating music for the Activision video game “Blur” and Roy was out in LA with JKL again in 2011, writing tracks for various alternative electronic acts. While Roy was out in LA, he also spent time writing with Rock Nation and techno maestro Claude von Stroke.
2006 was the year that The Freelance Hellraiser came into his own as an artist. Writing sessions with Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody and Iain Archer turned into his stunning debut album for Sony imprint Brightside, ‘Waiting For Clearance’. The album spawned the stunning singles ‘Want You To Know’ and ‘Weightlessness’, a Hellraiser remix of this was a firm Zane Lowe favourite.
During 2006, Roy also found the time to remix for the likes of Snow Patrol, Klaxons, Editors, Humanzi, Rasmus and The Darkness. He also produced singles for Lady Posh and spent some time producing material for Freeform Five.
2005 was another busy year for Roy. He spent a huge six months on tour in America with Sir Paul McCartney, DJing as opening act. This is the second tour Roy has done for Paul in the past few years. The pair have also collaborated on an album together under the moniker of Twin Freaks, where Roy has used his remix skills and created his own take on the entire McCartney catalogue.
When not on the road, in 2005 Roy remixed the likes of Editors, White Rose Movement, Bodyrockers and Rasmus.
In 2004, FLH also completed a reproduction of Placebo’s next single for Virgin/HUT. That year he also remixed singles for Kasabian, Chikinki, Ocean Colour Scene and Heron.
In 2003 his remixes included Pink, Just Jack, Badly Drawn Boy, Northern State and Christina Aguilera singles. FLH also produced the single by Marianne Faithful & Blur that features in the Ericsson TV ad.
In the past his remixes have included singles by Ashanti, Richard Ashcroft, Shakira, Ian Brown, The Polyphonic Spree, The Reindeer Section, Cosmos, Gomez and Sum 41 in his own distinctive style.
He is a regular guest DJ on Kiss FM and Xfm and travels the globe as a highly prized DJ.
Kid Gloves are currently producing a track for Cheryl Cole’s next album, a track they have co –written, while Roy is developing the electronic act Enfant.
