Jacknife Lee

Over the last few years, Jacknife Lee has become one of the most sought after and highly influential producers around. This was confirmed when Jacknife won two Grammy Awards at the 2006 ceremony for his production work on U2's "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb". U2 and Jacknife were honoured for winning Best Rock Album and Best Rock Song for "City Of Blinding Lights". Now a permanent L.A. resident, Jacknife has had the opportunity to work over the last few years to work with some of the biggest names in music.

Foremost amongst those were the legendary  R.E.M. Jacknife has had the privilege to produce and mix two albums from the band now, “Collapse Into Now”, the follow up to the highly regarded 2008 album “Accelerate” and very sadly for millions of fans, the band’s last studio album.  Where the latter was universally regarded as one of the band’s most exciting rock records, “Collapse Into Now”  has a broader spectrum of production style, some stunning ballads and acoustic driven mid tempo tracks, but also some classic R.E.M rock stompers. Featuring the stunning singles “UBerlin” and the heart achingly beautiful “Oh My Heart”, this album reminds us all why R.E.M were loved by millions of fans worldwide.

Also in 2010, Jacknife produced four tracks for the highly regarded techno noiseniks Crystal Castles, including the singles “Baptism” and the air play hit “Not In Love”, recently revocaled by Robert Smith. Hailed as one of the most important contemporary electronic acts around, Jacknife’s involvement in the record is indicative of the many different genres of music he has found success with.

Jacknife continued his success in 2010 as a writer and artist with the formation of Tired Pony , a supergroup made up of Gary Lightbody, Peter Buck and other such talented musicians. Jacknife and band members recorded the stunning album “The Place We Ran From” in a two week session at the very beginning of 2010 and have performed beautiful and intimate dates in both London and New York.

Also in 2010 Jacknife had a thoroughly enjoyable recording session with a long time admired artist – Ric Ocasek. The resulting 5 tracks he produced for Ric are featured on the recently released  album “Move Like This” including the singles “Blue Tip” and “Sad Song”.

Jacknife Lee has a long and extremely creative relationship with one of Britain’s most successful bands, Snow Patrol. This culminated this year with the stunning new LP “Fallen Empires” which on release thumped straight into the Top 5 album charts in Ireland, Belgium, the UK, the Netherlands, and Germany and has sold over half a million units in its first month of release. The album was recorded largely in Malibu early in 2011 and JKL mixed it in his new studio in Topanga Canyon.

Also in 2011, JKL set aside some time to focus on flexing his pop muscles and has recently had several hugely successful writing sessions with none other than Bonnie McKee. Bonnie has written for some of America’s biggest pop stars including Katy Perry and Britney Spears. Katy and JKl have been writing material for Bonnie’s own album after she recently signed to Dr Luke’s own label.

The last few months of 2011 have seen Jacknife producing the new Silversun Pickups album and early in the new year, he is scheduled to produce the next Two Door Cinema Club album.

Jacknife has also had a creative partnership that spans two albums with everyone’s favourite hipsters Weezer. Originally summoned over to work with them in 2008, to work on the eponymous album of that year, Jacknife produced the hits from that record “Pork And Beans” and “Troublemaker”. When they went back into the studio to make what would become “Raditude” Jacknife was drafted in and worked on many tracks on the record, which went on to debut at 7 on the Billboard chart.

Jacknife then made it back to the UK for the summer of 2009, where he wrote and produced music for a new hugely high tech video game for Activision called ‘Blur’. Released in the early part of 2010, it set a new standard in racing games and with JKL’s frenetic, electronic soundtrack, captivated teenage minds across the globe.

Also in 2009, Jacknife was privileged to work with the uber-talented Regina Spektor. They found time to complete three tracks, all which feature on her stunning album “Far”, including the beautiful first single “Laughing With” and follow up single “Dance Anthem Of The 80s”.

As 2009 drew to a close, Jacknife got back into the studio with Snow Patrol to record three more songs for their Best Of album which was released late last year and achieved platinum sales within a few weeks.

2008 was another great year for JKL. He had the opportunity to work with some truly talented artists and delivered some exceptional records. Included in this was the last Bloc Party album "Intimacy". His production work on the band’s massively successful singles “One Last Chance” and “Flux” heralded an exciting change in direction for the band - a much more electronic and dance floor driven sound, and it was this sound that they explored with great results on “Intimacy”.

During the summer of that year, Jacknife produced and mixed the latest album for Snow Patrol – “A Hundred Million Suns”. His production work for the band over the last three albums have turned them into worldwide indie-pop heavyweights and this new album is packed full of classic songs that Gary Lightbody is renowned for.

2007 was a stellar year for Jacknife. As mentioned briefly earlier, he spent much of the year producing and mixing one of the most important and influential bands on the planet, R.E.M. “Accelerate” was recorded in three countries and the result is as ambitious with its song writing as it is organic and live-sounding in its production.

In January 2007, Garret spent two weeks in Olympic studios working on new tracks with everyone's favourite nordic rockers The Hives. First single out of the session "Tick, Tick, Boom" was a Radio 1 favourite.

Jacknife ended 2006 knowing that the album he produced with Snow Patrol, "Eyes Open" was the biggest selling UK album of the year. To date, the album has sold in excess of 6 x platinum in the UK and over 2 million in Europe. Big congratulations to the band and Garret for this huge achievement.

Jacknife had a hugely creative and successful 2006. The Editors album that he produced late in the year entitled "An End Has A Start" entered the UK National LP chart at Number 1 on release, and has gone on to sell platinum in the UK. Hailed by fans and critics alike as one of the most significant releases of that year, it spawned the gorgeous singles "Smokers" and "An End Has A Start".

Another highlight for Jacknife of 2006 was producing the stunning Bloc Party album "A Weekend In the City" which on release went to the top of the albums charts in the UK, Ireland, Australia and Japan. It's an album rich in textures and atmosphere, yet with their trademark attitude, perfectly captured by first single "The Prayer".

During 2006 he also found time to complete writing and producing tracks for his own artist album under the moniker Jacknife Lee released on Fiction Records, as well as working on new material for one of his other creative collaborations, Saville Robots.

During 2005 Garret worked with both established acts and those about to breakthrough, on some truly beautiful records. He produced the stunning Editors single "Bullets", and worked with The Freelance Hellraiser on his debut for Brightside/Sony, "Waiting For Clearance". Garret co produced the first single "Want You To Know" as well as the future singles "Real Soul LED" and the title track off the album "Waiting For Clearance".

At the beginning of 2005, Garret produced Atlantic America's hard rockers Vaux debut album "Beyond Virtue, Beyond Vice".

It was in 2004 that Garret spent the highly creative and productive period of time with U2, working on tracks that would become the multimillion selling album "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb". Garret has production credits on seven tracks on the album, including the Grammy Award winning "City Of Blinding Lights", the stunning "A Man And A Woman" as well as "One Step Closer". During the summer of 2005, Garret was once again called on by U2 for more additional production and mixes for various tracks featuring on upcoming soundtracks.

Another highlight for Garret in 2004 was producing and mixing the internationally acclaimed Snow Patrol album "Final Straw". The album has now sold over two million copies worldwide, been nominated for Best Album at the 2004 Brits and has recently won the Ivor Novello award for Best Album in 2005.

In 2004 he produced three singles off Aqualung's album for Warners and produced eight tracks for BMG artist Kasabian's debut album.

Garret is also an established remixer and has in the past remixed singles by U2, Christina Aguilera, New Order, Longview, Buck 65, Elkland and Lost Prophets. In 2003 he remixed singles by T.L.C., Pink, Eminem, Junior Senior, Aqualung, Harry, F.S.O.L., Dirty Vegas & Badly Drawn Boy and reproduced 'It's Tricky' by Run DMC for a single release and remixed Basement Jaxx 'Where's Your Head At' for US release.

Garret's material is also featured on adverts and movies including the #1 movie ‘28 Days Later’. In 2010 Gary Lightbody and JKL wrote and produced the score for the critically acclaimed  Irish film “My Brothers”. The pair were nominated for Best Original Score at the Irish Film and Television Academy Awards later that year.
